Construction at Queenston Plaza –
2009 Travellers' Season

Queenston, Ontario, May 22, 2009 – The Canada Border Services Agency's (CBSA) Niagara/Fort Erie Region would like to inform Canada-bound travellers entering the country by car or bus via the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge that they may experience significant delays during peak volume periods (weekends and statutory holidays).

The Queenston Plaza is undergoing major redevelopment to expand processing capacity. There is currently a limited number of primary lanes available for processing vehicles at this border crossing until the scheduled completion of the project, which is anticipated to be in the fall of 2010.

Traffic at other border crossings within the Niagara/Fort Erie Region is moving well or experiencing minimal delays. Three border crossings in this region are in close proximity to the Queenston-Lewiston border crossing. Travellers are encouraged to plan alternate routes and check current border traffic conditions. Some of the available resources to check border traffic conditions are listed below:

  • the CBSA Web site at www.cbsa.gc.ca
  • the Government of Canada Wireless Portal through your Web-enabled mobile device at wap.gc.ca or www.gc.ca
  • calling 1-800-715-6722 or consulting the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission Web site at http://www.niagarafallsbridges.com

If delays are reported at the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge, you may wish to consider rerouting to the Rainbow Bridge via I-190 to the Robert Moses State Parkway, or to the Peace Bridge via I-190.

The Whirlpool Bridge is a dedicated NEXUS border crossing for NEXUS members only. Delays are never experienced at this crossing. Information about how to enrol in the NEXUS program can be found at www.NEXUS.gc.ca.
