Chief Mountain port of entry opens for the season

Calgary, Alberta, May 12, 2011 – The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is pleased to announce that the Chief Mountain port of entry is re-opening for the season, beginning Sunday, May 15, 2011.

Chief Mountain is located along Highway 6 in Alberta. Last season, 93,672 travellers entered Canada at the Chief Mountain port of entry, and CBSA officers are preparing for another busy summer. Here are some tips to help make your border crossing easier:

• Bring identification for yourself and all children travelling with you.
• Make a full declaration.
• Know your personal exemption limits.
• Keep all your receipts handy.
• You cannot bring firewood and live bait into Canada without a permit. Visit www.beaware.gc.ca.
• Travelling with pets? Dogs and cats that are at least three months old need signed and dated certificates from a veterinarian verifying that they have been vaccinated against rabies within the last three years. Service dogs are not subject to any restrictions if the dog is accompanied by its owner.
• Importing a vehicle? Visit www.riv.ca for step-by-step instructions. Do not attempt to undervalue the purchase price of the vehicle as this could lead to seizure, penalties and criminal prosecution. It’s not worth the risk!
• Travelling with firearms or weapons? You must declare all firearms and weapons when you enter Canada. If not, they will be seized and you could face criminal charges. You need documents to prove that you are entitled to possess a firearm in Canada, and you must transport it safely. Most weapons are prohibited from entering Canada: tasers, brass knuckles, pepper spray, etc.
• Finally, be patient. Summer holidays and long weekends usually mean longer lines at the border. Be sure to add this travel time to your itinerary.

May 15 – May 31:	9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
June 1 – September 5:	7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
September 6 – September 30:	9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
