Edmundston, New Brunswick, May 10, 2007 -- The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) reported today that a U.S. resident attempted to enter Canada with 15 handguns, 11 of which are prohibited weapons. The individual was charged in court this morning under three sections of the Customs Act: failing to report goods in his possession, making false or deceptive statements and attempting to smuggle prohibited goods.
This was joint force operation with the Integrated Border Enforcement Team. The Edmundston Police Force assisted the CBSA with the case.
CBSA officers discovered the firearms hidden in the backseat of the individual’s truck after examining the interior of the vehicle. A detector dog was also used in the search.
All travellers entering the Port of Edmundston are questioned regarding the importation of weapons and given an opportunity to declare them, thereby avoiding fines and prosecution.
CBSA officers are Canada’s first line of defence in protecting this country from illegal weapons and other contraband. The CBSA is committed to protecting Canada’s borders and keeping communities safe.
