Vancouver, British Columbia, August 20, 2009 — The Honourable Peter Van Loan, Minister of Public Safety, joined by the Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of State (Sports) and the Honourable Naomi Yamamoto, Minister of State for Intergovernmental Relations for the Province of British Columbia, announced expanded border-clearance services for the start of a second daily AMTRAK train between Vancouver, British Columbia, and Seattle, Washington.
"This announcement clearly demonstrates our government's commitment to tourism and the economic prosperity of Canada," said Minister Van Loan. "Cross-border travel and commerce are essential to a healthy economy. Extending our service hours for a second daily AMTRAK trip is another demonstration of our government's commitment to efficient cross-border travel for residents and visitors to British Columbia."
The expansion of services provided by the Canada Border Services Agency is a pilot project that will last until after the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
"Our government is a proud partner of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games. With less than six months to go before we welcome international visitors to Canada, our venues are completed and our Canadian athletes are ready to compete against the best in the world," said Minister Lunn. "This new AMTRAK train will assist us in welcoming more visitors to the Games through this important corridor."
"The AMTRAK passenger rail service expansion will be an exciting way to bring visitors and spectators to this area during the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, which start in less than six months," said Minister Yamamoto. "The collaborative approach by B.C., the federal government and Washington State in securing additional service is a testament to our strong and open relationship."
